Guide for Marking Standing Red Pine

Step 1. Tree Inspection

Tree has defect in butt. Cut above defect.

Inspect butt area for tree/skidder damage for rot or cavities.

Rotten butts or damage can sometimes be cut above affected area and adjusted for size.

Tree will not be acceptable due to sweep.

Inspect tree height for defects and sweep

Sweep is considered acceptable if center line does not fall outside of tree.  Double sweep or corkscrew is not acceptable.

Step 2. Tree Measurement

Crew member measuring tree size.

6 ft. measurement

Using a regular tape measurer, wrap tape around the tree making sure tape is level and not kinked.  This should be done approximately 6 ft up from butt or where tree is going to be cut.

Tree circumference. 45 1/2 in.

Reading measurement

Read the measurement in inches.  Use Pole specs chart to see what size pole the tree would make.

Tree is painted with appropriate length.

Pole Length Determination

Upon inspection of tree and measurement, it would be determined that this would be a 45 ft. pole cut to a 47 ft length for transport.
